The Greening through ICT Summit (GtICT) examines opportunities both where information and communications technology (ICT) is used as a tool to improve environmental and societal functions, and improving the energy efficiency, carbon footprint and life cycle management of ICT itself.  

ICTs are currently transforming all spheres of human activity and creating, in our 21st century societies, a paradigm shift similar or even greater in scope and impact to the industrial revolution. ICTs are a key driver of sustainable development, with the potential to reconcile socioeconomic benefits with positive environmental impacts. 
The Summit’s objective is to identify the combination of key technological, commercial and public policy challenges that must be overcome to achieve sustainability in our increasingly connected world.  As such, it seeks to build a broad dialogue among the research community, ICT practitioners and its vertical application sectors, equipment and technology providers, the ICT standardization community, and with public policy influencers and decision makers.     
Young Professionals are particularly invited to contribute to this open dialogue about Earth's future. The first IEEE Young Professional Green ICT Idea Competition will focus on contributing ideas on Greening ICT itself and Greening through ICT various application sectors of ICT. The ultimate goal being not only to create “Sustainable ICT” but also to enable transformative change across society through “Sustainability by ICT”.

Luis Neves was born in Portugal. In 1975 he finished his University degree in History.

In May 2004 Luis Neves joined Deutsche Telekom. As from December 1st 2008 he was assigned to the position of Vice President Corporate Responsibility. Effective February 2012 he was appointed to the position of Group Sustainability and Climate Protection Officer.

Luis Neves has been playing a fundamental role in promoting the role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in relation to Climate Change. In 2006 he was elected CEO of GeSI, the Global e-Sustainability Initiative. He successfully developed GeSI to become a recognised global organisation in the sustainability area. Under his leadership, GeSI became a globally recognised Industry organisation in the field of sustainability and a “thought Industry Leader”.

Ever since he was able to bring together two parts of the ICT Industry, Telecom Suppliers and Services Providers and furthermore UN organisations such as the ITU, UNFCCC and UNEP as well as other stakeholders such as the WBCSD, the WGBC, the StEP Initiative, WRI, the Carbon Trust and the WRFA.

As GeSI Chairman he was the driving force of the recent Study #SMARTer 2030 Study “ICT Solutions for the 21st Century” done by Accenture Strategy.

Luis has been holding positions in many organizations and initiatives such as CEO of the GeSI - Global e-Sustainability Initiative, Steering Committee Member of the United Nations Global Compact Lead Group, Steering Committee Member of the United Nations “Caring for Climate” Initiative, Member of the ERT - European Round Table of Industrialists Climate Change Group, Member of the SAP Sustainability strategy, reporting & assurance Board Advisory Panel, Co-chair of the ICT4EE Forum, Member of the ICC Commission on Environment and Energy and Green Economy Task Force Meetings, Member of the Steering Committee of “Econsense”, The German Sustainability Association, Member of the Environment and Sustainability Steering Committee of BITKOM, the German ICT Association , Advisory Board member of the UNFCCC Momentum for Change Initiative and Member of the Leadership Team of the Joint Audit Cooperation (JAC) initiative and Jury member of GreenTec Awards, member of the Advisory Council of B.A.U.M. e.V. and Board Member of the World Resources Forum Association.

Mats is Head of Sustainability with responsibility for circular economy, energy performance and triple bottom line impact of products, services and company operations. Taking this role after restructuring the Health & Safety organization in the company.

Mats has also initiated a research project with Columbia University on how information technology has the potential to accelerate development to reach the Sustainable Development Goals.

Before rejoining Ericsson, among several other leading roles, Mats has been Head of Sustainability at Sony Ericsson launching the Green Heart brand for mobile phones and accessories.

Jaafar M. H. Elmirghani is full Professor and Chair in Communication Networks and Systems, and the Director of the Institute of Integrated Information Systems within the School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, University of Leeds, UK. He has co-authored Photonic switching Technology: Systems and Networks, (Wiley) and has published over 450 papers. He has research interests in communication systems and networks. Prof. Elmirghani is Fellow of the IET, Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institute of Physics. He was Chairman of IEEE Comsoc Transmission Access and Optical Systems technical committee and was Chairman of IEEE Comsoc Signal Processing and Communications Electronics technical committee, and an editor of IEEE Communications Magazine.

He was founding Chair of the first IEEE ICC/GLOBECOM optical symposium at GLOBECOM’00, the Future Photonic Network Technologies, Architectures and Protocols Symposium. He chaired this Symposium, which continues to date under different names. He was the founding chair of the first Green Track at ICC/GLOBECOM at GLOBECOM 2011, and is Co-Chair of the IEEE Green ICT initiative, a pan IEEE Societies initiative responsible for Green ICT activities across IEEE, 2012-present. He is and has been on the technical program committee of 35 IEEE ICC/GLOBECOM conferences between 1995 and 2016 including 15 times as Symposium Chair.

He has given over 55 invited and keynote talks over the past 8 years. He received the IEEE Communications Society Hal Sobol award, the IEEE Comsoc Chapter Achievement award for excellence in chapter activities (both in international competition in 2005), the University of Wales Swansea Outstanding Research Achievement Award, 2006; and received in international competition: the IEEE Communications Society Signal Processing and Communication Electronics outstanding service award, 2009, a best paper award at IEEE ICC’2013, the IEEE Comsoc Transmission Access and Optical Systems outstanding Service award 2015 in recognition of “Leadership and Contributions to the Area of Green Communications”, received the GreenTouch 1000x award in 2015 for “pioneering research contributions to the field of energy efficiency in telecommunications”, shared with 6 GreenTouch innovators the 2016 Edison Award in the “Collective Disruption” Category for their work on the GreenMeter, an international competition, clear evidence of his seminal contributions to Green Communications which have a lasting impact on the environment (green) and society and he received the 2016 Premium Award for best paper in IET Optoelectronics.

He is/was an editor of: IET Optoelectronics, Journal of Optical Communications, IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials and IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications series on Green Communications and Networking. He was Co-Chair of the GreenTouch Wired, Core and Access Networks Working Group. He has been awarded in excess of £22 million in grants to date from EPSRC, the EU and industry and has held prestigious fellowships funded by the Royal Society and by BT. He was an IEEE Comsoc Distinguished Lecturer 2013-2016.

Chih-Lin I received her Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University. She has been working at multiple world-class companies and research institutes leading the R&D, including AT&T Bell Labs; Director of AT&T HQ, Director of ITRI Taiwan, and VPGD of ASTRI Hong Kong. She received the IEEE Trans. COM Stephen Rice Best Paper Award, is a winner of the CCCP National 1000 Talent Program, and has won the 2015 Industrial Innovation Award of IEEE Communication Society for Leadership and Innovation in Next-Generation Cellular Wireless Networks.

In 2011, she joined China Mobile as its Chief Scientist of wireless technologies, established the Green Communications Research Center, and launched the 5G Key Technologies R&D. She is spearheading major initiatives including 5G, C-RAN, high energy efficiency system architectures, technologies and devices; and green energy. She was an Area Editor of IEEE/ACM Trans. NET, an elected Board Member of IEEE ComSoc, Chair of the ComSoc Meetings and Conferences Board, and Founding Chair of the IEEE WCNC Steering Committee.

She was a Professor at NCTU, an Adjunct Professor at NTU, and currently an Adjunct Professor at BUPT. She is the Chair of FuTURE 5G SIG, an Executive Board Member of GreenTouch, a Network Operator Council Founding Member of ETSI NFV, a Steering Board Member of WWRF, the ComSoc Rep of IEEE 5G Initiative, a member of IEEE ComSoc SDB, SPC, and CSCN-SC, and a Scientific Advisory Board Member of Singapore NRF. Her current research interests center around “Green, Soft, and Open”.

Charles Despins’ career has spanned more than 30 years in both the academic and industry segments of the information and communications technologies (ICT) sector. In addition to his academic work, he has held various posts in the private sector, namely at Bell Nordiq Group as vice-president and chief technology officer, as a consultant for wireless network deployments in India and China and for 13 years, as President and CEO of Prompt inc., an ICT research and development consortium. He is currently Dean of Research at École de Technologie Supérieure (Université du Québec) in Montreal, Canada.

Dr. Despins is a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada and a frequent advocate on issues regarding the opportunities ICT offer to achieve sustainability in the 21st century.

Professor Mihaela Ulieru – awarded digital economy pioneer - works with many governments and organizations seeking to make ICT an integral component of policy making for a healthier, safer, more sustainable and innovation-driven world. She founded two research labs leading several international large-scale projects, among which: Sustainable Personal Living Technologies, Organic Governance, Adaptive Risk Management, Self-organizing Security, IT Future of Medicine and Emulating the Mind. For her scientific work which has positively impacted citizens in emerging and advanced economies including Asia Pac, North America and Europe she was awarded, among many others, the “Industrial Research Chair in Intelligent Systems” and the “Canada Research Chair in e-Society” and was appointed to numerous boards among which the Science Councils of Singapore, Canada and European Commission and to the Global Agenda Council of the World Economic Forum. Coaching young people to value relationships and making powerful introductions to assist them, has contributed to their ongoing success. One example is Garrett Camp, founder of StumbleUpon and Uber, whom she guided for his MSc degree one decade ago. She is a Research Professor at Carleton University, Global Leader with the Aspen Institute and President of the IMPACT Institute for the Digital Economy, advising several high tech start-ups and non-profits around the world.

Dr. Kieren Mayers is Director of Environment and Technical Compliance at Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe, which is responsible for the sales and marketing of PlayStation® products and services. In addition, he conducts and publishes academic research on energy efficiency, carbon foot printing, and extended producer responsibility for recycling as Executive in Residence at INSEAD Social Innovation Centre. He has over 20-years’ experience in environmental management and sustainability within the electronics sector.

Dr. Robert S. Fish is Vice President of Industry and Standards Activities of the IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc). He is also President of NETovations, LLC, a consulting company focused on the creation of communications and networking technology innovation as well as a faculty member in the Computer Science Department of Princeton University. From 2007 to 2010, he was Chief Product Officer and Senior VP at Mformation, Inc. a company specializing in carrier software for mobile device management. From 1997 to 2007, Rob was Vice President and Managing Director of Panasonic US R&D laboratories working on embedding networking into consumer devices. Prior to this, he was Executive Director, Multimedia Communications Research at Bellcore/Telcordia after starting his career at Bell Laboratories. Besides his many publications, Dr. Fish has been awarded 17 patents. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University.

Dr. Fish is Steering Committee chair and Co-founder of ComSoc’s Consumer Communications and Networking Conference. He is the former chair of ComSoc’s GLOBECOM and ICC Management and Strategy Committee. For his leadership and contributions to the Multimedia Communications Technical Committee, Dr. Fish was the recipient of ComSoc’s MMTC Distinguished Service Award.

Rob has also been a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Standards Association, was Chair of IEEE-SA’s Global Committee, and was a founding member of the IEEE-SA Corporate Advisory Group. He co-edited a series in IEEE Communications Magazine on IEEE standards in communications and networking. During his career, Dr. Fish and his organizations have initiated and managed standards development activities in IEEE, ISO/IEC JTC1, 3GPP, OMA, IETF, ATSC, CableLabs, OSGi, and probably a few others. In 2016, for his leadership in standards activities, Dr. Fish was awarded the Standards Medallion of the IEEE Standards Association.

Dr. McCune received his Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate degrees at UC Berkeley, Stanford, and UC Davis respectively.  His experience in RF circuits, signals, and systems goes back more than 40 years.  Within this career, he has founded two Silicon Valley startups, Digital RF Solutions (1986) which merged with Proxim in 1991, and a second start-up Tropian (1996), which was acquired by Panasonic 10 years later.  He retired from Panasonic in 2008 as a Corporate Technology Fellow.  Among other activities, he now also serves on the IEEE Green-ICT steering committee and also as a co-founder and the Chief Technology Officer of Eridan Communications.  He has 86 patents issued in the USA.  Earl is a double sole-author with Cambridge University Press, first with Practical Digital Wireless Signals (2010), and also with Dynamic Power Supply Transmitters (2015).  He is an IEEE MTT Distinguished Microwave Lecturer since 2013.

Professor Brendan Galbraith is a senior lecturer in innovation management at Ulster University and a member of AdCom for IEEE Technology Engineering Management Society (TEMS). He is a research leader on large scale EC research and innovation projects with a total value of more than £5 million. His research has been presented in the European Parliament, European Commission, Committee de Regions, Northern Ireland Assembly and published in academic journals such as Technovation, Technology Analysis and Strategic Management (TASM), R&D Management, Production Planning and Control and International Journal for Operations and Productions Management. Brendan has co-authored and co-edited two books, on innovation intermediaries and social innovation. He guest edited three special issues on innovation intermediaries for TASM and one special issue at TIM Review.

Brendan was the lead author of the Business and Management Research Institute (BMRI) REF 2014 Case Study 'Promoting innovation in high-tech SMEs' that was rated 4-star by the REF Panel. This was a 4-star Case Study from BMRI and largely based on European-wide impact from two EC FP7 large-scale projects that were led by Brendan Galbraith.

Co-founder/judge of ECIE Innovation & Entrepreneurship Teaching Awards. Harvard Business School trained to deliver Microeconomics of Competitiveness. Co-inventor for the Engage eParticipation software tool that was released under an open source licence (Aferro GPL v3) on the EC's Join-up open source website. Judge for the Global Social Entrepreneurship Summer School Competition & The Undergraduate Awards.

Brendan is an expert evaluator for the EC, board member European Network of Living Labs, visiting scholar at University of California, Berkeley, member of the Northern Ireland European Regional Forum, Harvard Business School Microeconomics of Competitiveness Affiliate Network and Principle Advisor for Enactus Ulster. He is a winner of the Belfast Ambassador Recognition Award from the Belfast City Council.

Born and raised in Germany, Dr. Taiber enjoyed his academic training at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ), Switzerland, where he first graduated with a master degree in mechanical engineering in 1991 and then completed his PhD degree in Technical Sciences in 1996.
After his studies Dr. Taiber started his professional career at a Swiss software start-up company in 1995. He joined BMW Group in 1997 as in-house consultant in the vehicle development division where he worked on different aspects of functional integration and validation of vehicle systems, vehicle electronics platforms as well as vehicle program management. He assisted the CEO as technology advisor and supported the CIO in a major reorganization of the IT division which resulted in holding different leadership positions in the areas of IT strategy, IT program management, IT innovation management and IT benchmarking. In 2003 Dr. Taiber was engaged in the initial planning team to implement the masterplan of a 250 acre automotive research campus in South Carolina closely located to the BMW US manufacturing site as a public private partnership model and to help shape the strategic collaboration with Clemson University. The first facility created on the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) campus in 2005 was the BMW Information Technology Research Center (ITRC) – a 80’000 sqft building specifically designed to collaborate with BMW IT partners on open innovation and strategic advanced technology projects including the aspects of the “networked vehicle” and the “next generation data center”. Dr. Taiber was leading the innovation activities at ITRC as director of the Information Technology Research Office for multiple years and collaborated during this time closely with the BMW Tech Office in Silicon Valley. In 2010 Dr. Taiber joined Clemson University as research professor and member of the Automotive Engineering faculty and created in 2012 the Advanced Vehicle-Infrastructure Technology Institute which he headed as director until the end of 2015. Since January 2016 Dr. Taiber is serving as CTO of the International Transportation Innovation Center (ITIC) and leading the effort to develop and implement in close proximity to CU-ICAR a 650 acre transportation innovation testbed and automotive technology experience center in a public private partnership model. He also has been appointed as adjunct professor to continue to serve CU-ICAR.

Professor Jean-Luc Gaudiot received the Diplôme d'Ingénieur from the École Supérieure d'Ingénieurs en Electronique et Electrotechnique, Paris, France in 1976 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1977 and 1982, respectively.

He is currently a Professor in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University of California, Irvine. He was Chair of the Department from 2003 to 2009. During his tenure, the department underwent significant changes. These include the hiring of twelve new faculty members (three senior professors) and the remarkable rise in the US News and World Report® rankings of the Computer Engineering program from 42 to 28 (46 to 36 for the Electrical Engineering program).

Prior to joining UCI in January 2002, he was a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Southern California since 1982, where he served as Director of the Computer Engineering Division for three years. He has also designed distributed microprocessor systems at Teledyne Controls, Santa Monica, California (1979-1980) and performed research in innovative architectures at the TRW Technology Research Center, El Segundo, California (1980-1982). He frequently acts as consultant to companies that design high-performance computer architectures, and has served as an expert witness in patent infringement and product liability cases. His research interests include multithreaded architectures, fault-tolerant multiprocessors, and implementation of reconfigurable architectures. He has published over 200 journal and conference papers. His research has been sponsored by NSF, DoE, and DARPA, as well as a number of industrial organizations.

From 2006 to 2009, he was the first Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Computer Architecture Letters, a new publication of the IEEE Computer Society, which he helped found to the end of facilitating short, fast turnaround of fundamental ideas in the Computer Architecture domain. From 1999 to 2002, he was the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Computers. In June 2001, he was elected chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Architecture, and re-elected in June 2003 for a second two-year term. In 2009, he was elected to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Computer Society for a 3-year-term. He was the Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Publications Board Transactions Operations Committee (2010-2011), the Chair of the IEEE Computer Society Publications Board Magazines Operations Committee in 2012, the IEEE Computer Society vice President, Educational Activities Board in 2013, and is now the IEEE Computer Society vice President, Publications Board.

Dr. Gaudiot is a member of AAAS, ACM, and IEEE. He has also chaired the IFIP Working Group 10.3 (Concurrent Systems). He was co-General Chairman of the 1992 International Symposium on Computer Architecture, Program Committee Chairman of the 1993 IFIP Working Conference on Architectures and Compilation Techniques for Fine and Medium Grain Parallelism, the 1993 IEEE Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing (Systems Track), the 1995 Parallel Architectures and Compilation Techniques Conference (PACT ‘95), the High Performance Computer Architecture conference in 1999 (HPCA-5), and the 2005 International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium.

In 1999, he became a Fellow of the IEEE, “For Contributions to the Programmability and Reliability of Dataflow Architectures.” He was elevated to the rank of AAAS Fellow in 2007, “For Distinguished Contributions to the Design and Analysis of Highly Efficient Multiprocessor and Memory System Architectures.”

In his spare time, Dr. Gaudiot combines his passion for aviation with his love for teaching and he is an active flight instructor (both primary and instrument).
